Sage ambient fragrances: pleasure of the senses and mysticism

Sage is a medicinal plant used for millennia to relieve respiratory or digestive pain, as well as hormonal disorders in women. It is also used in cooking, as an aromatic herb, and as an ambient fragrance.

But that's not all! many ethnic groups around the globe, such as the Amerindians or the Egyptians of antiquity, used and still use sage during purifying magical rituals. Indeed, some varieties of sage, such as california white sage, would have the power to ward off evil spirits and negative energies in all their forms.

How to practice a Native American purification ritual with sage?

There are several ways to practice a purification ritual with sage. The most widely used method is that of the Amerindians. Here's how:

  • Preferably choose california white sage, Salvia Apiana variety in the form of dried leaves (loose), or small bundles called"fumigation stick"or"smudge". You must also have at your disposal a non-flammable container such as a bowl or a hollow ceramic plate, for example. Native Americans usually use a large shell or a calf shell,which are representations of the deities of the ocean.
  • With caution, light the leaves or sage stick with a match or lighter. Make sure that no flammable objects are near you for the duration of the ritual. Let the sage burn for a few seconds, then blow on the flame to extinguish it. The combustion will then produce a fragrant smoke that you will spread to the places you want to purify.
  • For the purification of a place: keep a good ventilation, by keeping a window ajar for example. The smoke must not stagnate. Purify each piece of the place by moving clockwise. Then, in each room, spread sage smoke everywhere, from bottom to top and from left to right, insisting especially in the nooks and crannies, and always going clockwise.
  • For the purification of a person or object.  The method is exactly the same. It is therefore a question of spreading sage smoke all around the person or object to be purified. Be very careful not to hurt anyone. The ancestral rite is that sage is allowed to burn until it has completely turned into ashes. White sage that has already been used in a fumigation ritual should not be rekindled.
  • To extinguish white sage before the end of its combustion, you can pass it under water, or crush it in an ashtray for example.
