Our 20 recipes for using perfumed oils, essential oils, and room fragrance extracts on a daily basis

1 -The essential ultrasonic diffuser!

The ultrasonic diffuser or ultrasonic diffuser is an essential device for diffusing ambient fragrances in your space. You can use it with room fragrance extracts, perfume oils or essential oils.

Here's how to do it:

  • Fill the water tank: Open the water tank of the ultrasonic diffuser and fill it with clean water to the maximum fill line indicated. Make sure not to exceed this line to avoid overflow.

  • Add scent: Add the scent of your choice to the water reservoir. If you use an essential oil or perfumed oil: 5 to 10 drops is enough. If you use a room fragrance extract, 20 to 30 drops will provide sufficient intensity.

  • Close the tank and turn on the diffuser: Carefully close the water tank and make sure it is secure. Next, plug the diffuser into an electrical outlet and turn it on following the manufacturer's instructions.

  • Adjust the settings: Most ultrasonic diffusers offer different setting options, such as run time, diffusion intensity, and sometimes even mood light options.
  • Adjust the settings according to your preferences and the needs of your environment.

  • Enjoy the scent: Once the diffuser is turned on, it will begin to diffuse a mixture of water and essential oils as a fine vapor into the air. This will fill the room with your favorite scent and create a pleasant, calming atmosphere.
  • Clean regularly: To keep your ultrasonic diffuser in good working order and avoid any contamination issues, clean it regularly according to the manufacturer's instructions.

  • Refill as needed: When the scent begins to fade, simply add a few more drops of the desired scent and a little water to the diffuser reservoir.

2 - I create my own room spray

Need to deodorize or perfume a room in a single gesture? The room spray (or room fragrance spray) is your ally: you pull the trigger and the mission is accomplished!

Let's see how to make it yourself by choosing your favorite flavors.

Ingredients and materials needed:

  • An empty spray bottle of 100 to 150 ml
  • Distilled water or filtered water
  • Rubbing alcohol (or vodka) as an emulsifying agent
  • A bottle of perfumed oil, essential oil, or room fragrance extract of your choice
  • Optional: vegetable glycerin to help mix the oils with the water

Instructions :

  1. Start by preparing your spray bottle by cleaning it thoroughly and drying it.
  2. Fill the spray bottle with distilled water or filtered water to about 3/4 of its capacity.
  3. Add rubbing alcohol or vodka to the bottle. Use about 1/4 the amount of water. The alcohol will help emulsify the oils with the water and disperse them evenly.
  4. If desired, you can add a small amount of vegetable glycerin (about a teaspoon) to help mix the oils with the water and extend the shelf life of the spray.
  5. Then add around 20 to 30 drops of fragrance oil (or 15ml of room fragrance extract of your choice) to the bottle. You can use just one scent or create a blend yourself.
  6. Close the spray bottle tightly and shake it vigorously for a few seconds to mix the ingredients.

Your room spray is now ready to use! Spray it in the air in your home, on your curtains, sheets or pillows to add a pleasant scented touch to your environment.

3 - I make or revive a potpourri

Potpourri offers two significant advantages: it diffuses its delicate scents continuously, while bringing a decorative touch to the room where it is placed. Find out how to make one yourself below, and how to refill it when its scent wears off.

Ingredients and materials needed:

  • Dried flowers (lavender, roses, marigolds, etc.)
  • Dried flower petals
  • Dried lemon peels
  • Cinnamon stick or powder
  • Whole cloves
  • Fragrance oils or room fragrance extracts of your choice
  • An airtight container (glass jar, fabric bag, etc.)

Instructions :

  1. Start by choosing a variety of dried flowers, dried flower petals, and other ingredients like dried lemon peels, cinnamon sticks or powder, and cloves.
  2. Arrange the ingredients in an airtight container, alternating layers to create a colorful and aromatic mixture. Make sure to fill the container to the brim without compressing it.
  3. Then add a few drops of fragrance oils or 15ml of room fragrance extracts of your choice to the potpourri mixture. You can use just one scent or create a blend to suit your taste.
  4. Close the container tightly and let the potpourri sit for a few days to allow the essential oils to diffuse into the ingredients.
  5. Once the potpourri is ready, place it in different rooms of your house to diffuse its pleasant and refreshing scent. You can place it in decorative bowls, on shelves or even in hanging bags in cupboards.
  6. If the scent begins to fade, you can add a few more drops of fragrance oils to the potpourri to freshen it up.

4 - I create scented sachets for the dryer

Getting dressed becomes a pleasure when the linen is clean and delicately scented! Follow our advice to make your own scented sachets to put in the dryer, and relive this simple little happiness every day...

Ingredients and materials needed:

  • Breathable fabric (such as cotton, muslin, or linen)
  • Twine or ribbon
  • Padding material (optional)
  • Home fragrance extract of your choice. Be careful to choose a translucent variety so as not to stain your laundry.

Instructions :

  1. Cut the breathable fabric into small squares or rectangles of approximately 10x10 cm. Make sure the fabric is breathable to allow the scent to diffuse effectively.
  2. If you are going to use stuffing, sew the two pieces of fabric together, leaving a small opening on one side for the filling.
  3. If using stuffing, fill each pouch with a small amount of stuffing. This will help maintain the shape of the sachet and spread the scent more evenly. Stuffing is optional but can help extend the life of the scent. These could be pieces of old cotton clothing for example.
  4. Add a few drops of room fragrance extracts of your choice to the upholstery or directly to the fabric. Make sure to use uncolored room fragrance extracts.
  5. Close the opening of the bag by hand sewing or using a dot of fabric glue. Make sure the sachet is sealed well so the perfume doesn't escape too quickly.
  6.  If you wish, you can add string or ribbon to the bag so you can easily hang it in your dryer.
  7. Once the bags are ready, place them in the drum of your dryer before starting the drying cycle. The movements of the drum will circulate the scented air, leaving your laundry with a pleasant, fresh smell.
  8. After use, you can reuse the sachets several times by adding a few extra drops of fragrance oils when the scent begins to fade.

6 -I make my own natural scented candles

Have you always dreamed of making your own scented candles? Follow our tutorial below. Please note, this is not the easiest DIY in this blog article and we advise you to be accompanied by someone more experienced than you during the first manufacture.

Ingredients and materials needed:

  • Soy wax, rapeseed wax or beeswax
  • Candle wicks with metal holders
  • Fragrance oil or room fragrance extract
  • Candle dye (optional)
  • Glass jars or containers for candles
  • Kitchen thermometer
  • Tweezers
  • Knife or cutter
  • Metal or wooden spoon
  • Kitchen scale (optional)
  • Ribbon or labels (optional)

Instructions :

  1. Prepare your containers: Place the candle wicks in the center of each jar or glass container. Make sure they are straight and secure them by gluing them with a little hot wax to the bottom of the pots. If necessary, use tweezers to hold them in place.
  2. Melt the wax: In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the wax of your choice. If using soy or beeswax, use a thermometer to monitor the temperature. The ideal temperature for adding fragrance oils is around 70 to 80°C.
  3. Add the fragrance oil or room fragrance extract: Once the wax has melted, remove it from the heat and let it cool slightly for a few minutes. Next, add the fragrance oil or perfume extract of your choice. The recommended dosage is approximately 30ml of fragrance oil or 60ml of room fragrance extract per 500g of wax. You can adjust these quantities according to the desired fragrance intensity.
  4. Optional: If you wish to color your candles, also add a few drops of candle dye to the melted wax and mix well until the color is evenly distributed.
  5. Fill the containers: Carefully pour the scented wax into the prepared containers. Make sure the wicks are centered while the wax cools and begins to solidify.
  6. Let cool and harden: Let the candles cool and harden completely for several hours or overnight.
  7. Trim the wicks: Once the candles have completely cooled and solidified, trim the wicks to a length of approximately 0.5 to 1 cm above the surface of the candle.

Decorate the containers: If desired, decorate the containers with ribbon or candle labels.

Enjoy your scented candles: Light your scented candles and let yourself be carried away by the delicious fragrances you have created!

Warning: Handling fragrance oils or room fragrance extracts at high temperatures presents a fire hazard. When the "flash point" of the perfumed liquid is reached, that is to say when it is brought to a certain temperature, it can ignite spontaneously. We therefore recommend that you make your scented candles with the support and advice of someone experienced in the matter.

    10 - I make shoe deodorizer sachets

With this quick and easy tutorial, no more shoe odors in the house! The method is similar to that of scented dryer sachets.

    Ingredients and materials needed:

    • Breathable fabric (such as cotton, muslin, or canvas)
    • Padding (optional), e.g. old cotton clothing cut into small pieces
    • Fragrance oil or room fragrance extract of your choice

    Instructions :

    1. Cut the breathable fabric into squares or circles of approximately 10 to 15 cm on each side.
    2. If you want, you can sew two pieces of fabric together, leaving a small opening on one side for filling.

    7. If the scent begins to fade, simply add a few drops of fragrance oil or air freshener extract to the sachets.

Time-saving tip: room fragrance extracts are non-greasy. You can therefore pour a few drops directly into your shoes, on the insole (unless it is leather). Choose a translucent room fragrance extract to avoid coloring your insole. Bad odors are instantly neutralized!

11 - I perfume my living space with a perfume burner

Using the perfume burner is a very easy and effective way to deodorize and pleasantly perfume your living space with scented oils or room fragrance extracts.

Unlike the ultrasonic diffuser, the perfume burner has the advantage of requiring very little maintenance. On the other hand, it is not recommended for diffusing essential oils because it brings them to a high temperature, which alters their effectiveness.

    • Choose a scented oil or room fragrance extract. Fragrance oils are more concentrated and will therefore need to be diluted twice as much in water as room fragrance extracts.

    • Fill the incense burner receptacle with water, up to approximately 2/3 of its capacity.

    • Add the desired scent: if you are using a scented oil, 5 drops will be enough; with a room fragrance extract, allow 3 to 5ml depending on the desired intensity.

    • Light the candle placed below the water receptacle. Make sure that your incense burner is placed on a stable surface and away from any flammable element.

    • Under the effect of the heat of the candle, the scented water will heat up and vaporize, thus diffusing the perfume in the room. You should start smelling the fragrance in just a few minutes.

Regularly monitor the water level in the receptacle. When it is empty, extinguish the candle by blowing it out, or refill the receptacle by preparing a new mixture of scented water. Be careful when handling the perfume burner: it is certainly very hot!

Our safety advice: the perfume burner must always be used under the supervision of an adult.

12 - I make my own effervescent and scented bath bombs

Nothing like a hot, fragrant bath to recharge your batteries! Here is a tutorial for making your own effervescent and scented bath bombs to enjoy a moment of relaxation just for you.

    Ingredients and equipment needed:

    • 1 cup baking soda
    • 1/2 cup citric acid (available at craft or health food stores)
    • 1/2 cup cornstarch (like cornstarch)
    • 1/2 cup Epsom salts (magnesium sulfate)
    • 2 tablespoons coconut oil (or other vegetable oil)
    • 20 to 30 drops of fragrance oil or essential oil of your choice
    • Food coloring (optional)
    • A special bath bomb mold, or failing that, an ice cube mold

    Instructions :

    1. In a large bowl, mix the baking soda, citric acid, cornstarch, and Epsom salts until well combined.
    2. Melt the coconut oil in a double boiler or microwave until liquid, then add it to the dry mixture. Stir quickly to distribute the oil evenly throughout the mixture.
    3. Add 20 to 30 drops of fragrance oil or essential oil of your choice to the mixture. Make sure to mix well so the scent is evenly distributed.
    4. If you want to color your bath bombs, add a few drops of food coloring to the mixture.
    5. Using your bath ball mold or ice cube mold, firmly press the mixture into compact balls or cubes. Make sure to fill the mold well and press firmly to prevent the balls from falling apart after unmolding.
    6. Allow the bath bombs to dry in a cool, dry place for at least 24 hours, or until completely dry and solid.
    7. Once the bath bombs are completely dry, store them in an airtight container until ready to use.

To use the effervescent bath bombs, simply add them to your hot bath. They will begin to fizz and release their relaxing scent, transforming your bath into an invigorating spa experience!

Warnings: do not use room fragrance extract to make your bath bombs. Favor essential oils. Make sure you can tolerate dermatological contact with essential oils before using your homemade bath bombs. Essential oils are not recommended for pregnant women and children under 6 years old because they can cause skin reactions.

13 - I make my own incense sticks

What if you made your own homemade incense yourself? This fun experience will allow you to invent your own perfumes and create incense sticks with original scents, which do not exist anywhere commercially!

    Ingredients and materials needed:

    • 1/2 cup natural wood powder (such as sandalwood, cedar, or palo santo)
    • 1/4 cup powdered gum arabic (binding agent)
    • 1 to 2 teaspoons of perfumed oil or essential oil; or 15ml of room fragrance extract of your choice
    • Parchment paper
    • Blank incense sticks

    Instructions :

    1. In a bowl, mix the natural wood powder and powdered gum arabic until well combined.
    2. Gradually add the fragrance oil, essential oil or room fragrance extract to the mixture. Start by adding a small amount of perfume, mix, then add more depending on the desired fragrance intensity. Be sure to mix well so that the flavors are evenly distributed.
    3. Add a little water to the mixture, only a teaspoon at a time, until you have a thick, pliable dough.
    4. Spread the dough in a layer 2 to 3mm thick on the baking paper. Now roll your blank incense sticks in the incense paste to shape them. The more batter on each stick, the better, but the mixture should stay in place on the stick without dripping.
    5. Place the prepared incense sticks on a flat surface and let them dry for at least 48 hours, until they are completely dry and firm.
    6. Once dry, you can burn them as you would commercial incense sticks. Light the end of the incense stick, let it burn for a few seconds, then gently blow out the flame to let the fragrant smoke emerge.

Here you are with homemade incense sticks scented to your liking! You can customize the scents by using different scents and adjust the proportions according to your preferences.

Warning: always burn incense under adult supervision and in a well-ventilated room.

14 - I make my own rattan stem diffuser

The capillary diffuser has the advantage of continuously perfuming a room, without any intervention on your part. It guarantees you a pleasant scent permanently for a period of approximately 2 to 3 months. Want to make one yourself? Follow our tutorial:

    Ingredients and materials needed:

    • A small vase or glass bottle (maximum capacity 200ml)
    • A light carrier oil (like grapeseed oil, jojoba oil, or sweet almond oil)
    • 40 to 60 drops of perfumed oil or 30ml of room fragrance extract of your choice
    • A bouquet of rattan diffuser sticks

    Instructions :

    1. Choose a small vase or glass bottle with a narrow neck. Make sure the container is clean and dry.
    2. Fill the vase or bottle with carrier oil to about 3/4 of its capacity. The carrier oil will serve as a base for the fragrance and allow the diffuser sticks to infuse.
    3. Then add about 40 to 60 drops of fragrance oil or 30ml of perfume extract of your choice into the container.
    4. Gently stir the carrier oil and fragrance mixture to blend them well.
    5. Then insert the diffuser sticks into the container. The sticks will absorb the fragrance oil and release the fragrance into the air by capillary action.
    6. Wait a few hours to allow the sticks to absorb the fragrance. You can turn the sticks over once to ensure more uniform diffusion of the perfume.
    7. When the sticks are well soaked in the perfume, place the diffuser in the room of your choice. The sticks will slowly diffuse the fragrance into the air, creating a fragrant and pleasant atmosphere.
    8. To revive the scent, you can turn the sticks regularly or add a few more drops of fragrance oil or air freshener extract to the container when the scent begins to fade.

    3. When you have reached the desired length for your bracelet, tie the ends of the wire securely together to form a loop. The most effective knot is the "surgeon's knot". You will easily find video tutorials on the internet.
    4. Choose a scent that you like (perfume, essential oil, scented oil or room fragrance extract) and place a few drops on each wooden or stone bead.
    5. Let the pearls absorb the chosen scent for a few minutes.
    6. Once the scent has been absorbed, you can wear your aromatherapy bracelet. The natural movement of your wrist will slowly release the scent throughout the day.

19 - I make my own scented fondants with vegetable wax

This is the new trend in home fragrances! Scented melts are small blocks of scented vegetable wax that are melted on a perfume burner or a diffuser with gentle heat. Under the action of heat, the wax melts and the perfume it contains diffuses into the ambient air, deodorizing and pleasantly scenting it.

When the room is sufficiently scented, you turn off the perfume burner or diffuser. The wax solidifies again, locking in the scents until the next use. It's easy to use, and extremely effective!

Do you feel ready to make your own scented fondants? Follow our guide:

    Ingredients and materials needed:

    • Soy or rapeseed vegetable wax
    • Fragrance oil, essential oil or room fragrance extract of your choice
    • Scented fondant mold (can be silicone or metal)
    • Pan
    • Metal or wooden spoon
    • Kitchen thermometer (optional)

    Instructions :

    1. Start by melting the vegetable wax in a saucepan over very low heat. Follow the manufacturer's temperature recommendations. If you have one, use a kitchen thermometer to monitor the temperature.
    2. Once the wax has melted, remove it from the heat and let it cool for a few minutes.
    3. Then add the scents of your choice to the melted wax. If you have opted for essential oil or perfumed oil, the recommended dosage is around 30 to 40 ml of perfume for 500g of wax. If you use room fragrance extract, double the dose and use around 60ml per 500g of wax.
    4. Stir the mixture well until the fragrance is completely incorporated.
    5. Carefully pour the scented wax mixture into the fondant mold. Fill it well to the brim.
    6. Allow the fondants to cool and harden completely at room temperature. Allow at least 4 to 6 hours.
    7. When the fondants are completely cooled and solidified, you can unmold them.
    8. Place a fondant in your incense burner (or gentle heat diffuser) and light a tea light underneath. The heat from the candle will slowly melt the fondant, releasing the scent into the room.
    9. When the scent starts to fade, you can simply remove the fondant from the burner and replace it with a new one.

    20 -I make a dried fruit potpourri

We previously saw how to make potpourri with dried flowers. Here is now an alternative recipe with dried fruit, to vary the pleasures! The method is very similar.

    Ingredients and materials needed:

    • Dried fruits of your choice (apples, oranges, lemons, cranberries, etc.)
    • Perfumes of your choice: essential oil, perfumed oil or room fragrance extract
    • Optional spices (cinnamon sticks, cloves, star anise, etc.)
    • Airtight container (glass jar, fabric bag, etc.)

    Instructions :

    1. Start by selecting a variety of dried fruits. You can use sliced apples, oranges, lemons, dried cranberries or other fruits of your choice. Make sure they are completely dry to avoid any mold in your potpourri. To make your own dried fruit, you will easily find tutorials on the internet.
    2. If you like, you can add spices to your potpourri to add depth to the scent. Cinnamon sticks, cloves, and star anise are great choices. Arrange them among the dried fruits.
    3. Add a few drops of the chosen perfume (essential oil, perfume oil or room fragrance extract) to the dried fruits. Use a single scent or create a blend by combining several scents of your choice. For example, for a citrus potpourri, you could use orange, lemon, and grapefruit scents. For a spicier scent, you could use cinnamon, clove, or ginger.
    4. Mix the dried fruit and perfume well to distribute the scents evenly.
    5. Transfer the scented potpourri to an airtight container, such as a glass jar or cloth bag. Make sure the lid is tightly closed to lock in the scent.
    6. Let the potpourri sit for a few days to allow the fruit to absorb the scent. Shake or stir the potpourri occasionally to reactivate the scent.
    7. Place your scented potpourri in different rooms of your home to diffuse its pleasant and refreshing scent. You can place it in decorative bowls, on shelves or even in hanging bags in cupboards.

21 - I transform my indoor fountain into a room fragrance diffuser

Many owners of indoor fountains don't know it, but this well-being device can also serve as a room fragrance diffuser! To do this, we use the continuous flow of water as a vector for diffusing the ambient scent.

The instructions for use are therefore very simple: to transform your indoor fountain into a room fragrance diffuser, simply pour a bottle of room fragrance extract (15ml) into the water tank of the fountain, and that’s it!

Very quickly, the water and the perfume mix under the action of the pump. Then, as it circulates in the fountain, the water gradually releases the fragrant aromas into the ambient air. This tip allows you to effectively perfume a room for approximately 3 to 5 days. When the scent fades, simply pour a new bottle of room fragrance extract into the fountain's water tank. Practical !

Warning: use only (non-greasy) room fragrance extracts in your indoor fountain. Above all, no essential oils or perfumed oils which could damage the pump.
