Each species of bird has its habitat type because each bird does not have the same needs. Thus, there are several types of nest boxes. The robin will settle in a semi-open nest box while the chickadee will nest in a closed nest box.
Location is everything. The entrance hole should ideally be oriented southeast. Eggs and chicks should be out of reach of predators. The nest box should be placed about 2 meters above the ground for easy access and cleaning. The best is to install it in a quiet place sheltered from the wind and slightly exposed to the sun. Secure it securely to prevent it from falling during prevailing winds.
You can install several nest boxes in your garden but be careful to respect a minimum distance of 30 meters between each shelter. Some birds do not like to nest near others of the same species. Therefore, be sure to install different nest boxes that will attract different species.
