Reciting the Mantra "Om Mani Padme Hum" with a mala

For novices who want to dive into the practice of meditation with a mala, the mantra "Om Mani Padme Hum" is a great place to start.

This mantra is a powerful meditation tool derived from Tibetan Buddhism. It is universally recognized for its calming effects on the mind, and for its compassionate virtues.

First, let's familiarize ourselves with the mantra itself. "Om Mani Padme Hum" is a Sanskrit phrase that can be translated in different ways, but is usually interpreted as "Let's celebrate the jewel in the lotus". Each syllable of the mantra has its own deeper meaning, but overall, it evokes universal compassion and purification of the mind.

Now, let's move on to the practice of reciting with a mala. The mala is traditionally made up of 108s, which will help you count the repetitions of the mantra. First, take the mala in your dominant hand and start by holding the first bead between your thumb and middle finger.

Starting with the pearl right next to the guru pearl (the largest pearl), mentally or aloud recite the mantra "Om Mani Padme Hum" while gently moving your thumb to the next pearl. Continue this process until you have recited the mantra on each bead of the mala, using each bead as a counter to keep track of your repetitions.

According to Tibetan tradition, you must recite the mantra 108 times! But if you don't have enough time, you may prefer a multiple of 108 and therefore recite the mantra only 27 times or 54 times.

If you get to the guru bead, you have completed a full turn of the mala and therefore recited the mantra 108 times. Congratulations!

You can now take a moment to breathe deeply and feel the calming effects of your meditation.

By regularly practicing the recitation of the mantra "Om Mani Padme Hum" with a mala, you will cultivate compassion for yourself and others, while purifying your mind and developing greater spiritual awareness.
