Tiki is called "Ti'i" in Tahitian and means "man", "god" or "demigod". In Tahiti, it is still considered that a Tiki placed outside a house provides protection to the inhabitants.
Legends say that the Tiki is the creator of man and that Polynesian sorcerers attributed powers to it. The head of the tiki symbolizes the power it houses. His eyes express knowledge and supernatural power. As for her outstretched mouth, sometimes she sticks out her tongue or shows her teeth, in order to mark the challenge and provoke the opponent.
The Polynesians revered and feared him. The tiki represents their ancient gods and distant mythical ancestors.
