Tiki totem for indoors or outdoors: a coconut tree trunk entirely sculpted by hand!

Dimensions: height 97 to 100cm x diameter 20 to 30cm approximately. Weight: 30 to 50Kg approx. (the weight is given as an indication and may vary according to arrivals). Material: solid coconut wood from sustainable sources. Handcrafted creation: natural imperfections in wood are normal characteristics (cracks, irregularities, etc.), each statue is unique and may therefore differ from the model photographed. For outdoor use : we recommend applying a stain to the statue (product available in all DIY stores).

A truly impressive Tiki!

This large Tiki totem pole is a handcrafted creation entirely hand-carved from a coconut tree trunk. From the outset, it impresses with its measurements: with a height of 1 metre, it is impressive!

Then, the piercing gaze of the Tiki, but also the work of the sculptor further reinforce this impression of being in front of a truly atypical object... If you adopt it, you can display it indoors or outdoors:

  • Indoors : no special maintenance except dusting from time to time. You can optionally varnish the Tiki if you want to darken its color, or give it a brighter look.
  • Outdoors : Tiki will develop a patina over time. It will crack in places and take on a very trendy "driftwood" shade. After a few years, it will really look like the giant Tikis you see on the beaches of Hawaii... If you prefer the statue to retain its original appearance, you can prevent this ageing phenomenon by applying a high-protection stain to the wood, and by renewing it regularly (every 2 to 5 years or so).

Our tips for caring for your wooden Tiki garden statue

When you display a wooden statue outdoors, you need to protect it from rotting, the main enemy of putrescible wood.

Once exposed outdoors, your wooden Tiki will work, adapt, and its appearance will evolve little by little. Under the effect of the rain and the sun's rays, its colour will grey and develop a patina. Some cracks may appear. All this is normal and does not compromise the integrity of the statue. We will see below that this even helps to give it even more style and authenticity...

The most important piece of advice to follow is to prevent water from rising by capillary action to the inside of the statue. The best solution for this is to apply a water-repellent product under the statue. This product blocks water and prevents it from seeping into the wood.

If you do this, your statue will be able to be displayed outdoors for a long time without ever deteriorating.

Should I let the Tiki develop a patina, or preserve its original appearance?

Once your wooden Tiki totem is protected from rising waters, we advise you to choose whether you prefer to let it age naturally or if you want to preserve its original appearance.

At Coco Papaya, we believe that aging makes wood more beautiful, year after year. We are used to seeing old traditional wooden statues on our business trips and for us, the most beautiful ones are the ones that have been weathered by time. Another advantage of making this choice is that there is less maintenance to be carried out, except to renew from time to time the water-repellent product that protects the base of the statue from capillary rise.

If you prefer to preserve the original appearance of your wooden statue for as long as possible, then it will need to be given regular specific maintenance. We recommend covering the entire statue with at least two coats of high-protection stain. You will then have to repeat this operation every 2 to 5 years or so depending on the climatic conditions of your region.

The stain is available in all DIY stores. It protects the wood from the combined effects of rain, wind and sun. It is available in different finishes: matte, satin, or glossy. It is also available in a tinted version, but we recommend that you choose a clear stain for your garden statue.

Be careful: once the stain has been applied, it is very difficult if not impossible to go back! Be sure of your decision, otherwise, it's better to let a few months pass and think about it!

One last piece of advice: don't underestimate the wind. Place your statue in a sheltered place (near a wall, for example), or provide fasteners. If the wind blows it down, it could get damaged.
