The Maori "Teko Teko": a traditional statue that protects the home and its inhabitants

Dimensions: height 50cm x diameter 20 to 23cm approximately. Weight: 6 to 8Kg approximately. Material: solid coconut wood from sustainable sectors. Artisanal creation: the natural imperfections of the wood are normal characteristics (cracks, irregularities ...), each statue is unique and can therefore present differences from the model photographed. For outdoor use : we recommend the application of a lacquer on the statue (product available in all DIY stores).

Carved directly from a coconut tree trunk

It only takes a glance to understand that this statue has something special. The work of the craftsman, who carved it directly from a coconut tree trunk, brings it a unique style and authenticity.

If it is exhibited outdoors, the statue will patina over time: The wood will crack in places and take on a very trendy "driftwood" shade. This will give it an antique look, like those objects that have a history...

If you want the statue to retain its original appearance, you can prevent this aging phenomenon by applying an anti-UV lacquer to the wood, and renewing it regularly (every 2 years or so).

Indoors, the Teko Teko statue can be used as an extra seat (stool) or plant holder, for example.

Origin and meaning of Teko Teko

The Teko Teko is a traditional Maori statue generally used to honor deceased ancestors. It most often depicts a former tribal leader performing a war dance of the "Haka", and defying the enemy with a grimace and a menacing face.

According to custom, the Teko Teko must be displayed outside the foyer, to accommodate the visitor. If he comes with friendly intentions, then Teko Teko offers him his blessing. If, on the contrary, it is an enemy, then Teko Teko brings his strength and protection to the inhabitants of the home he watches over.
