What does this statue tell us?

Shiva Nataraja has four arms. He holds in his upper right hand a drum(damaru)symbolizing the primordial sound of the creation of the universe, in his left hand a flame symbolizing the destruction of the world. His second right hand is in abhaya-mudr,a protective gesture. His lower left hand shows his raised leg symbolizing the hope of liberation.

He crushes with his second leg the dwarf Apasmo-rapurua, also called Mulayaka, which represents ignorance.

It is surrounded by flames that symbolize the succession of cosmic cycles. Using his tiara-adorned bun(Ja-mukua),he channels the descent of the Celestial Ganges(mand-similar)to Earth.
