The Akans of Ghana accounted for these dolls with large heads that are flat circular very stylized.

A bit of history

Once in Ghana, a young woman Ashanti (ancient civilization of ghana) named Akua ("born on Wednesday") had difficulties to have a child (Ba). She went to consult the traditional healer, who recommended him to sculpt a small child of wood, and carry it, feed it, treat it as it would have done with a child of flesh and bone.

In the sight with his wooden doll cinched on his back, the villagers the were sometimes of the finger in a mocking "look at the child of Akua !" (Akua Ba). But Akua fell pregnant and gave life to a little girl full of health.

Its success encouraged other women with the same difficulties, to do also sculpt small dolls of wood. They named Akua'ba (the child of Akua) in his honor.
