Statuette of solid bronze representing Shiva Nataraja.

Shiva Nataraja has four arms. He holds in his right upper hand a drum (damaru) symbolizing the primordial sound of the creation of the universe, in his left hand a flame, symbolizing the destruction of the world. His second right hand is in abhaya-mudrā, the gesture of protection. His hand left below shows his leg raised, symbolizing the hope of liberation.

He crushes his second leg on the dwarf Apasmārapuruṣa, also called Mulayaka, which represents the ignorance.

It is encircled by flames that symbolize the succession of cosmic cycles. With the help of his chignon decorated with a tiara (jaṭā-mukuṭa), he channels the descent of the heavenly Ganges (mandākinī) on Earth.
