The Tiki, guardian of Pacific legends

At the heart of the Polynesian islands, Hawaii, Tahiti, the Marquesas, Maori New Zealand, the Tiki occupies a unique place in the imagination of the Pacific peoples. According to legends, it would be the first man created by the gods, or a deified ancestor, half-human, half-deity, who watches over the living from the afterlife. Each island, each archipelago has its own version of the myth, but all share this idea of a founding being, charged with power and knowledge.

Its carved features owe nothing to chance. The massive head would symbolise the spiritual strength it houses; the bulging eyes would evoke supernatural power and vigilance; the stretched mouth, sometimes sticking out the tongue or showing teeth, would mark the challenge thrown to hostile forces. In oral tradition, it is said that Polynesian sorcerers attributed protective powers to it: a Tiki placed at the entrance of a house would chase away evil spirits and watch over its occupants.

Today, the Tiki has crossed the oceans to become a universal symbol of surf culture and tiki bar spirit, while retaining its symbolic charge.
