The Eye of Saint Lucia: a lucky jewel
In Corsica, and all around the Mediterranean, the eye of Saint Lucia is considered a good luck charm.
This shell is native to the tropical and subtropical regions of the Pacific Ocean, and gets its name from the legend that it depicts the eye of Saint Lucia, a Christian saint.
It is considered a symbol of protection, good luck, and good fortune in many cultures around the world.
In Asia, called Shiva's eye, it is a talisman that purifies the aura, recharges the chakras, and develops extra-sensory faculties. Its name "Shiva's eye" comes from the resemblance of this shell to the 3rd eye that Shiva wears on his forehead.
The Legend of St. Lucia
According to legend, Saint Lucy was a Christian girl who lived in Sicily in the 3rd century. She was known for her beauty and piety, and she had dedicated her life to God.
One day, a young man who had fallen in love with her asked for her hand in marriage. However, St. Lucy refused, as she had taken a vow of chastity and had consecrated her life to God. The young man, furious at having been rejected, denounced Saint Lucy to the Roman authorities as a Christian, which was forbidden at the time.
Saint Lucia was arrested and sentenced to death. According to legend, her tormentors gouged out her eyes, but she continued to see thanks to God's goodness.
Saint Lucy has since become the patron saint of the blind and visually impaired.
