• The Kokeshi doll is native to northern Japan
• "Kokeshi" means "to make the child disappear" because in times of famine, some parents preferred to kill their newborn themselves rather than let him die until certain death. For every child sacrificed, a Kokeshi doll was made to perpetuate his memory.
