A true source of magic for thousands of years, the shell of the Abalone (or Abalone shell) is very mysterious: it is rocky and dull on the outside; shiny and pearly inside.

It has been used for centuries by Native Americans for its magical virtues. The 4 elements are represented in the sage purification process: the shell that comes from the water, the match that ignites the fire, the herbs and ashes that are the earth and finally the smoke that represents the air.

The shell, which has excellent heat resistance, has several natural holes, ideally placed to ventilate the smoke produced by fumigating sage or incense to burn.

How to use an abalone shell during a sage fumigation ritual?

Natural abalone shell is traditionally used by shamans to perform fumigation rituals. All Indigenous nations in North America burn sage, cedar, sweetgrass or juniper as incense to purify a place, an object, or even a person. Here's how.

Instructions for use:

  • Light the end of the sage bundle with a match or lighter.
  • Let it burn for 2 to 3 seconds and then blow on the flame to extinguish it.
  • Once the flame is extinguished, smoke emerges and diffuses the sweet scent of sage into your room. You can use a fumigation feather to direct smoke more precisely to the places, objects or people you want to purify.
  • Let the bundle burn gently in the shell where the ashes will settle. This combustion must always be done under the supervision of an adult, and in a suitably ventilated room.
  • When combustion is complete, check that all embers are extinguished, for example by filling the container with water.

If you do not use sage, but another plant or incense, the method remains the same. Above all, you have to be vigilant not to burn, and extinguish the embers at the end of the ritual.

Did you know that in addition to purifying your place of residence or a person you can also purify your jewelry or rolled stones of lithotherapy in this way? Just pass them several times in the smoke that emerges from the bundle of sage!
