The Gecko, a lucky animal

The gecko, with its distinctive silhouette and adhesive legs, is a fascinating creature that is attracting interest across different cultures.

Recognizable by its ability to climb vertical surfaces and even walk on the ceiling, the gecko is often considered an animal that carries good omens.

In Chinese culture, for example, the gecko is considered a symbol of success, due to its ability to climb effortlessly, thus symbolizing the ability to overcome obstacles with ease.

In many Polynesian and Asian cultures, the gecko is also considered a spiritual guardian, able to protect homes and ward off evil spirits.

In many tropical regions of the world, its presence is appreciated and considered auspicious because the gecko feeds mainly on mosquitoes and therefore helps to prevent their excessive proliferation.

Its name "gecko" originates from the Javanese "Gekoq", an onomatopoeic word that resembles the animal's cry. This term was later adopted by Europeans who encountered these lizards during their travels in the tropical regions of Asia. However, other terms exist to refer to these cousins of lizards. One thinks in particular of the word "margouillat", widely used in the French West Indies and Reunion Island to designate the gecko.

Today, all over the world, the gecko continues to inspire admiration and fascination for its unique abilities and its role in popular beliefs and traditions.

You too can invite this charming lucky reptile into your interior decoration or give it to someone you want to do well! Find our selection of gifts and various objects with the effigy of the gecko on this page.
