What is petrified wood ?

Petrified wood, from the Greek "Petros" which means stone, is also sometimes called "fossilized wood". It is a wood that has turned to rock under the combined effects of the time and geological forces.

This process of transformation may take place in a few hundred years only. But it is recognized that still much the appearance and texture of the wood. In the case of this sphere, the "feel" of the wood has completely disappeared in favour of the rock because the organic matter has absorbed large quantities of minerals, including silicates (family mineral belongs to the stones), which have become the majority in the composition of the material.

That is why this sphere seems to be made of rock rather than timber.

This process of fossilization is very advanced in the wood is carried out in several tens or even several hundreds of thousands of years.
