This gorgeous Buddha is seated in the posture of teaching and argumentation : it is the Vitarka-mudra.

Vitarka-mudra : the gesture of argumentation.

When he performs this müdra, Buddha is often sitting in the lotus position. The right hand is raised to the level of the torso, the left hand is maintained at the level of the hip. For the 2 hands, the ends of the thumb and index finger touch.

It is the gesture that adopted the Buddha when he taught the doctrine to his disciples and explained to them the divine law.
