The natural hue of the wood goes so well with Buddha

This beautiful hand-carved wooden statue of a meditating Buddha is a unique piece that you will never tire of contemplating every day! Forget about resin copies: your décor deserves the authenticity of craftsmanship.

Buddha is depicted here in a posture known as "Vitarka Mûdra", the Mûdra of Teaching and Argumentation : the right hand is raised at the level of the chest and the thumb forms a circle with the index finger, the other fingers being raised. This is the posture that Buddha took when he explained the doctrine to his disciples.

Suar wood: with a colourless wax finish, or tinted wax?

If you've looked at the descriptions of several Buddha statues in our shop, you may have noticed that some have a beige color, and others have a darker brown color. And yet; All of them are carved from the same wood: suar wood.

Now the question arises: which finish to choose?

Here is some information to help you:

  • The "clear wax" finish retains the natural color of the suar wood. The added layer of wax simply protects and nourishes the wood while giving it a silkier feel. Take a good look at the photos: in its natural state, suar wood has a lot of contrast. His drawings vary from very light beige tones to browns, sometimes forming a fairly clear demarcation. Our sculptors know how to highlight this aspect of the wood perfectly, but if you expect a material with homogeneous colours, then it is certainly better to opt for the following finish...
  • The "tinted wax" finish consists of the application of a brown wood wax to the statue. It is therefore no longer the natural colour of suar wood. But it makes it possible to make the color of the work more homogeneous, and to erase a little the color contrasts of the suar.

Our experience of the thing: in Asia, in the temples as well as among the inhabitants, it is the "tinted wax" finish that is most often encountered. But in Europe, this is not the case: the "colourless wax" finish is also finding its audience.
