Ashoka and the Mala

A very long time ago, an Indian king named Ashoka converted to Buddhism after witnessing the suffering caused by his wars. He decided to dedicate his life to the propagation of Buddhist teaching and had many monuments and stupas erected to honor the Buddha.

One day, while reciting a Buddhist mantra, he saw a small ant carrying a seed on his back. The king was touched by the ant's perseverance and realized that, just like the ant, every living thing had the potential to achieve great things if it showed perseverance and determination.

Inspired by this realization, King Ashoka decided to spread Buddhist teaching throughout his kingdom using mantras. He had mantras engraved on countless monuments, and encouraged his subjects to recite these mantras regularly to cultivate inner peace and compassion.

Since then, the recitation of mantras has become a common practice in the Buddhist tradition, often associated with the use of Tibetan malas to count recitations.

Malas are considered sacred tools that help focus and connect with spiritual practice.
