The Konjac sponge: what is it?

The Konjac sponge – or Amorphophalus Konjac – is above all a plant that grows in the forests of Southeast Asia. Tuber of the ginger and ginseng family, its roots are dried and crushed in order to obtain a fine powder, konjac powder. Mixed with natural calcium hydroxide and water (which form hydrated lime), it is heated, frozen and then dried and this is how we get the famous vegetable sponge that squats all our bathrooms.

Recognized as an indispensable part of the beauty routine of Japanese women for more than 2000 years, the Konjac sponge is also used as a slimming ally, because it is a low-calorie food that promotes digestion and weight loss.

The virtues of the Konjac sponge

Rich in vitamins, proteins, fatty acids, magnesium and antioxidants, Konjac sponge helps to clean the skin gently. It is also for the bath of their babies that the Japanese have created this ultra soft vegetable sponge!

Used daily in the shower or as a make-up remover, it promotes micro-circulation and cell regeneration,and gradually smoothes the skin grain. Antibacterial, it disincruses the pores of the skin, fights against the appearance of blackheads and eliminates dead skin.

For sensitive, delicate or acne-prone skin, the Konjac sponge proves to be a formidable ally: it helps regulate excess sebum, reduces redness, reduces enlarged pores and acne pimples. Even those who have psoriasis or eczema can incorporate it into their beauty routine. And since konjac has the same ph as normal skin, it naturally balances the ph of the skin: it increases that of dry skin and reduces that of combination to oily skin.

The use of the konjac sponge: how is it used?

For the first use, bathe your sponge in warm water to soften its plant fibers. When it is ready, simply water it with a little clear water and massage your skin with slight circular movements for a gentle cleansing. You can also use it with your cleaners, make-up removers or fetish soaps, or even without anything on it, because this vegan sponge is enough on its own.

Once your toilet or treatment is finished, gently wring it out and hang it so that it dries in the open air. If you have oily skin with an acne-prone tendency, prefer a sponge infused with bamboo charcoal. Choose the green clay one if you have normal to mixed skin, and if you have a rather sensitive skin, go to the classic one.

The konjac sponge: how to store it?

100% natural and vegan, the konjac sponge can be stored for about three to four months if used daily. Thanks to its string, hang your Konjac sponge, protected from moisture, so that it can dry between two uses. Do not leave it in the water: this could cause bacterial growth.

Once a week or so, clean it with Marseille or Aleppo soap, or immerse it in boiling water. We do not forget to change our sponge as soon as it starts to crumble: with its small price, it would be a shame to deprive ourselves of it! Bonus tip: you can keep it in the refrigerator for freshness, and when it is no longer usable, remember to compost it because it is 100% biodegradable.
