The sound box is a beautifully hand-painted half coconut. The keys are metal strips that you just have to slide to tune the instrument.
In addition to being a beautiful and very decorative object, this musical instrument produces a warm sound similar to that of the xylophone, It is played by operating the blades with the thumbs and index fingers.
But where does Karimba come from?
Karimba is native to sub-Saharan Africa and was invented over a thousand years ago.
It is a traditional musical instrument that is very common in several African countries, including Zimbabwe, Zambia, Mozambique and Angola. It is often used in religious ceremonies and healing rituals, as well as to accompany songs and dances.
The karimba consists of a wooden sound box, to which metal slats of different lengths and thicknesses are attached. The musician plays the karimba by pinching the blades with his thumbs and index fingers.
The sound produced by the karimba is soft and melodious, and can be modulated according to the pressure exerted on the blades. Karimba is often used to play traditional African music, but it is also enjoyed in other musical genres, such as jazz.
