The History of Guatemala's Marigold Dolls
Worry dolls, also known as "Quitapenas" in Spanish, have a history that dates back centuries in Central America, especially in the indigenous cultures of Guatemala and surrounding regions. The precise date of their appearance is not known, but they have been rooted in the craft and folk traditions of this region for a very long time.
In Mayan tradition, worry dolls are handmade by local artisans, often women, from natural materials such as cotton threads and small pieces of wood, paper, or cloth. The dolls are often dressed in colorful traditional Mayan outfits . They are carefully designed to look like small human characters.
According to traditional belief, when people have worries, they entrust them to their worry dolls before going to bed. The dolls should then be placed under the pillow and remain there overnight. That's where the magic happens! During sleep, worry dolls take all the worries and make them disappear, allowing people to find comfort the next morning, as soon as they wake up.
