Our tips for maintaining your Totem Tiki garden statue
When displaying a wooden statue outside, it must be protected from rotting, the main enemy of putrescible woods.
Once exposed outdoors, your wooden Tiki will work, adapt, and its appearance will evolve little by little. Under the effect of rain and sunlight, the wood will develop a patina. Some cracks may appear. All this is normal and does not compromise the integrity of the statue. We will see below that this even helps to give it even more style and authenticity...
The most important advice, which must be respected absolutely, is to ensure that water does not rise by capillary action, from the base to the inside of the statue. The best solution for this is to apply a water-repellent product under the statue. This product blocks water and prevents it from seeping into the wood. It should be renewed approximately every 2 to 5 years.
If you do this, your statue can be displayed outdoors for decades, without ever deteriorating.
Should I let the Tiki develop a patina, or preserve its original appearance?
Once your wooden Tiki totem is protected from rising water, we advise you to choose whether you prefer to let it age naturally or if you want to preserve its original appearance.
At Coco Papaya, we believe that aging makes wood more beautiful, year after year. We are used to seeing old traditional wooden statues on our business trips and for us, the most beautiful are the ones that have been patinated by time. Another advantage of making this choice is that there is less maintenance to be done, except to renew from time to time the water repellent product that protects the base of the statue from rising damp.
If you prefer to preserve the original appearance of your wooden statue for as long as possible, then it will need to be regularly serviced. We recommend that the statue be completely covered with at least two layers of high-protection stain. This operation will then have to be repeated every 2 to 5 years or so, depending on the climatic conditions in your region.
Stain is a common product, available in all DIY stores. It protects the wood from the combined effects of rain, wind and sun. It is available in different finishes: matte, satin, or glossy. It also comes in a tinted version, but we recommend choosing a clear stain that lasts longer and ages better.
Warning: once the stain has been applied, it is very difficult or impossible to go back! Be sure of your decision, otherwise, it's better to let a few months pass and think!
One last piece of advice: don't underestimate the wind. Place your statue in a sheltered place (near a wall for example), or provide fixings. If the wind makes it fall, it could be damaged.
