How to care for your wooden Tiki garden statue
When you display a wooden statue outdoors, you need to protect it from rot, the main enemy of putrescible wood.
Once exposed outdoors, your wooden Tiki will work, adapt and gradually evolve in appearance. Under the effect of rain and sunlight, the wood will develop a patina. A few cracks may appear. All this is normal and does not compromise the statue's integrity. In fact, as we'll see below, it adds to the statue's style and authenticity...
The most important piece of advice is to prevent water from rising by capillary action, from the base to the inside of the statue. The best way to do this is to apply a water-repellent product to the underside of the statue. This product blocks water from seeping into the wood. It should be renewed approximately every 2 to 5 years.
If you do this, your statue can be displayed outdoors for decades, without ever deteriorating.
Should I let the Tiki develop a patina, or preserve its original appearance?
Once your wooden Tiki totem has been protected from rising water, we advise you to decide whether you prefer to let it age naturally or preserve its original appearance.
At Coco Papaya, we believe that aging makes wood more beautiful, year after year. We're used to seeing old traditional wooden statues on our business trips, and for us, the most beautiful are those that have been patinated by time. Another advantage of this choice is that there's less maintenance to be carried out, apart from the occasional renewal of the water-repellent product that protects the base of the statue from capillary rise.
If you prefer to preserve the original appearance of your wooden statue for as long as possible, you'll need to provide it with regular specific maintenance. We recommend covering the entire statue with at least two coats of high-protection woodstain. This operation should then be repeated every 2 to 5 years, depending on the climatic conditions of your region.
Woodstain is a common product, available from any DIY store. It protects wood from the combined effects of rain, wind and sun. It comes in a range of finishes: matte, satin or gloss. It is also available in a tinted version, but we recommend you choose a clear woodstain, which lasts longer and ages better.
Be careful: once the stain has been applied, it's very difficult, if not impossible, to go back! Be sure of your decision, otherwise it's better to let a few months go by and think things over!
A final word of advice: don't underestimate the wind. Place your statue in a sheltered spot (near a wall, for example), or have it secured in place. If the wind blows it over, it could be damaged.
