The Gyan Mudra, Sacred Gesture of Awakening
In the silence of the forests of Uruvelā, where Prince Siddhartha, seated beneath the Bodhi Tree, fought his last battle against the demons of illusion, his fingers joined in an eternal gesture: the Gyan Mudra. This circle formed by the thumb and forefinger, while the other three fingers reach for the sky, sealed the moment when absolute knowledge pierced the veils of ignorance.
The thumb, symbolizing the individual soul, touched the index finger, representing the universal, thus merging the finite and the infinite into a single truth.
This mudra, born of the night of Awakening, became the emblem of unalterable wisdom. Buddha, now the Awakened One, adopted it to teach the path to liberation: the right hand raised in Gyan Mudra, conveying clarity of mind, while the left, resting on the knee in Dhyana Mudra, embodied the stability of meditation.
