Hand-carved on the Indonesian island of Sumba, this primitive stone mask combines symbolic power with minimalist elegance.

The natural raw materials used in its manufacture recall the ancestral traditions of this island, renowned for the richness of its craftsmanship and the spirituality that permeates its ritual objects. The headdress is made of jute rope and a frieze of cowrie shells, symbols of fertility and protection among the peoples of Sumba. The black metal base, discreet and contemporary, emphasizes the mask's verticality while lending it a sculptural presence.

Among local tribes, such masks are associated with animist rituals. In particular, they are used to ward off malevolent spirits and protect family homes or sacred places.

Add this powerful decorative piece to your decor, a cross betweentribal art and modern design. It's the ideal object to breathe an ethnographic and authentic soul into your space, in the Wabi-Sabi spirit for example.

The Marapu cult: a thousand-year-old animist tradition

On the island of Sumba, the inhabitants have been perpetuating a unique spiritual tradition for centuries: the Marapu cult.

This animistic belief, deeply rooted in everyday life, is based on the veneration of ancestors, nature spirits and the invisible forces that govern the world. The word "Marapu" designates the creator gods, the protective spirits and the souls of the deceased, the latter being considered intermediaries between the living and the divine world.

In the Marapu cult, every living being and even every object possesses a spiritual essence. This is why Sumba's traditional houses, with their high, pointed roofs, always include an altar dedicated to the ancestors. Rituals are numerous and varied: sacred dances, prayers and offerings punctuate daily life to ensure fertility, protection or success.

Tribal statuettes and masks from Sumba, such as those we are pleased to offer in our online store, play a central role in these practices. They serve as intermediaries with the spirits, protective talismans or ceremonial elements. In Sumba, cowrie shells are used as ritual ornaments, due to their symbolic power linked to prosperity and fertility.

Even today, despite outside influences, many Sumba villages continue to live by the principles of the Marapu cult, preserving a spiritual heritage of rare authenticity. To acquire a work of art from this universe is to open up to another way of seeing the world: intuitive, respectful and deeply connected to the invisible.
