On the island of Sumba, the inhabitants have been perpetuating a unique spiritual tradition for centuries: the Marapu cult.
This animistic belief, deeply rooted in everyday life, is based on the veneration of ancestors, nature spirits and the invisible forces that govern the world. The word "Marapu" designates the creator gods, the protective spirits and the souls of the deceased, the latter being considered intermediaries between the living and the divine world.
In the Marapu cult, every living being and even every object possesses a spiritual essence. This is why Sumba's traditional houses, with their high, pointed roofs, always include an altar dedicated to the ancestors. Rituals are numerous and varied: sacred dances, prayers and offerings punctuate daily life to ensure fertility, protection or success.
