A pearl of traditional Sumba handicrafts

  • Total dimensions: height 16cm x width 8cm x depth 6cm approx. Weight: 0.5kg approx.
  • Material: Black stone mask, jute rope headdress and natural cowrie shells, painted metal base and stem.
  • Artisanal creation imported in compliance with fair trade rules. Minor imperfections or differences in appearance are possible compared to the model photographed, testifying to the authenticity of each piece.

Carved by a talented craftsman from the island of Sumba, this primitive black stone mask combines symbolic power with minimalist elegance.

The natural raw materials used to make it recall the ancestral traditions of this region of Indonesia, renowned for the richness of its craftsmanship and the spirituality that permeates its ritual objects. The headdress is composed of a jute rope and a frieze of cowrie shells, symbols of fertility and protection among the people of Sumba. The black metal base, discreet and contemporary, highlights the verticality of the mask while giving it a sculptural presence.

In Sumba, such masks are associated with animist rituals. They are used to repel malevolent spirits and to protect family homes or sacred places.

A strong decorative piece, at the crossroads of tribal art and modern design, ideal for infusing an ethnographic and authentic soul into your space, in the Wabi-Sabi spirit for example.

The people of Sumba: the guardians of a thousand-year-old animist tradition

On the island of Sumba, Indonesia, the inhabitants perpetuate a unique spiritual tradition: the Marapu cult.

This animist belief, deeply rooted in everyday life, is based on the veneration of ancestors, nature spirits and the invisible forces that govern the world. The word "Marapu" refers to the creator gods, the protective spirits and the souls of the deceased, the latter being considered as intermediaries between the living and the divine world.

In the Marapu culture, every object, place, or living being possesses a spiritual essence. This is why the traditional houses of Sumba, raised and topped with pointed roofs, always incorporate an altar dedicated to the ancestors. The rituals are numerous: sacred dances, prayers and offerings punctuate the life of the clans to ensure fertility, protection or success.

Sumba tribal statuettes and masks, like the ones we are pleased to offer you in our online store, play a central role in these practices. They serve as intermediaries with the spirits, protective talismans or ceremonial elements. Cowrie shells are used as ritual ornaments, due to their symbolic power related to prosperity and fertility.

Even today, despite external influences, many villages in Sumba continue to live according to the Marapu principles, preserving a spiritual heritage of rare authenticity. Acquiring a work from this universe therefore also means opening up to another way of seeing the world: intuitive, respectful, and deeply connected to the invisible.

Natural materials and craftsmanship are the 2 main sources of inspiration for the brand to design its exclusive range of decorative objects with cosmopolitan accents.

In perfect harmony with current trends such as ethnic chic style or Bohemian atmospheres, Villa Métisse creations are designed so that decoration rhymes with serenity.

Basketry, different species of wood, bamboo, mother-of-pearl, brass, and many other noble materials are in the spotlight in the collections. But the real stars are the craftsmen who work them! Their virtuosity and the unlimited creativity that animate them, give birth to rare and authentic objects that bring a real extra soul.

In the era of all industrial, the handmade is gaining nobility. In our modern and hyper-connected interiors, inviting nature and the objects inspired by it is like taking a breath of fresh air...

Here a little wall decoration, then there, a pretty sculpture or an unusual object way "cabinet of curiosities"... No need to accumulate, bet on quality and authenticity to preserve the style and originality of your decoration.
