Tribal statue of a squatting villager wearing the traditional Timorese hat

  • Dimensions: height 45cm x width 9.5cm x depth 9.5cm approximately. Weight: 1.4kg approximately.
  • Material: Petrified mango wood.
  • Artisanal creation imported in compliance with fair trade rules. Minor imperfections or differences in appearance are possible compared to the model photographed, testifying to the authenticity of each piece.

This tribal statue made of aged, patinated and petrified wood comes from the island of Timor, Indonesia, a region renowned for its centuries-old and spiritual tribal sculptural traditions.

Entirely handcrafted according to ancestral know-how, it presents a stylized character with geometric shapes, with a head wearing the traditional Timorese headgear, a wide neck, the arms glued to the body in a squatting posture, both frozen and solemn. The square base is adorned on each of its faces with a sculpted spiral, an ancestral symbol of eternity, the cycle of life and divine protection.

Its texture bears witness to an ancient wood, worked according to a traditional ritual combining burning and prolonged burial underground, which gives it an ancient, almost fossilized look. Each crack, each asperity on its surface tells the story of the time that has marked its material, and further reinforces its authentic dimension.

In the tribal cultures of Timor, such statues were often placed at the entrance of houses (as protective figures to ward off evil spirits), or near family altars, as a representation of ancestors or benevolent spirits.

To ensure that it captures the eye and expresses all its aesthetic and symbolic power, here is how to display it in your home:

  • At eye level, on an open shelf, or on a narrow console in an entryway or hallway.
  • In a niche with indirect lighting, to create a sacred and theatrical atmosphere.
  • Or, at eye level, on a discreet base (black metal, raw wood) or a narrow console in an entrance or corridor: a symbolic place of passage between the inside and the outside, as in its traditional function.
  • It can also be displayed on its own on a wall shelf, in a sleek living room or reading corner.

Investing in the authentic, resisting the ephemeral

At a time when "trendy" decoration is consumed and thrown away like a cheap garment, choosing a work such as this statue of Timor is to affirm a real aesthetic and ethical bias.

Yes, the price is higher than a standardised object manufactured on an assembly line. But what you buy here is not just a statue : it is a fragment of history, a tradition passed down from generation to generation, and craftsmanship of a rare requirement. It is also an authentic work of art, full of meaning, with a magnetic presence, which follows no trend and never goes out of style.

Such objects, shaped with respect for nature and cultures, are distinguished by their raw elegance, their artistic value, and their timeless character. They age with us, cross the ages, and are passed on to our descendants, as we would with a family jewel or a precious artifact.

Unlike ephemeral decoration, they do not lose their value: on the contrary, they gain it!

That's why, from our point of view, investing in such a room is not a luxury, but a wise choice: for your home, for the planet, and for the communities that keep these traditions alive.
