Namji statuettes, native to the Namji region of northern Cameroon, are much more than just decorative objects. Each statuette is meticulously hand-carved by artisans using traditional techniques passed down from generation to generation. These unique works of art are adorned with pearls, shells, and plant fibers, symbolizing the fertility, protection, and cultural richness of the region.
Thesetraditional Cameroonian pôupées were originally intended for the play of little girls who took care of them, dressed them and fed them by meticulously taking up the gestures of their mother. They were also used to promote pregnancy for women with fertility problems: the statuette was then used as a surrogate child.
Today, these stylized sculptures have become trendy decorative objects.
