This large wooden statue comes to us from Timor, an Indonesian island, where it is called "ancestor totem" or "ancestor statue".
In local tradition, a statue of an ancestor is used to protect the home from evil spirits . It is necessary to take care of it, to pray to it, and to lay offerings at its feet so that its protection may endure.
This magnificent ancestor statue was handcrafted in Timor, respecting ancestral techniques, and features the inimitable patina characteristic of the Timorese style.
To make it, the craftsman uses a very old wood called "petrified wood". Once the statue is carved, he subjects it to an aging process that requires the use of water, sand and earth. Several months of patience are necessary to achieve this look worthy of an antique.
