The hand of Fatma (or Fatima) is also called "La Khamsa". It is an amulet protecting against the evil eye. This amulet of protection is not an exclusively Jewish or Muslim symbol: each culture has associated it with its own symbolic meaning.

Whether called the "Hand of Fatima", "Hand of Fatma", Khamssa or Khmissa (depending on the region), the hand is now the most frequently used form of talisman or amulet in North Africa and the Middle East.

Khamsa, which comes from "خمسة" in Arabic, means the number five (5) which can also have multiple symbolic meanings: the five pillars of Islam, the five senses or the five daily prayers

It is essentially composed of the 5 fingers but can also contain an eye in the middle that protects against the evil eye.
