The Vitarka Mudra and the Lotus Flower: The Symbols of This Buddha

In Buddhist iconography, every hand gesture, every posture has a precise meaning. Here, Buddha forms the Vitarka Mudra with his right hand: thumb and index finger close into a circle, while the other fingers remain extended. This gesture is traditionally associated with the transmission of teaching and the sharing of wisdom, that of the master who explains and guides.

He sits on a lotus flower, one of the oldest and most widespread representations in Asian art. This flower grows in the mud of ponds to blossom, pristine and luminous, on the water's surface: it has become the symbol of a spirit's purity rising above the difficulties of the material world, without being tainted by them. Associating it with Buddha reinforces this idea of an awakening built in spite of obstacles, not in their absence.

This symbolic reading is part of an ancient spiritual tradition: the beliefs and meanings surrounding Buddhist postures and symbols belong to culture and tradition, to be appreciated as such.

Where to Place This Statue in Your Home?

• A meditation or yoga corner: placed on the floor or on a small low piece of furniture, surrounded by a few candles, it visually anchors the space in calm.
• An entrance or a desk: it greets you with a serene gaze, without taking up all the space thanks to its measured size.
• A living room with a zen or bohemian style: on a raw wood console, a stone shelf, or simply on its own on a clear surface, letting the grain of the wood speak for itself.

If you love this bare wood grain, you'll find the same spirit in our selection dedicated to suar wood, or more broadly among our zen Buddha statues in varied postures and sizes.
