The 3 Laughing Buddhas: a bridge between Asian wisdom and decorative art
Although often referred to as "Wisdom Buddhas", these three figures are in fact an adaptation of the famous "Three Wisdom Monkeys", an ancestral representation from East Asia (mainly China and Japan). The principle: see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil.
In this revisited version, the monkeys are replaced by the Laughing Buddha (also known as Budai or Hotei), a popular figure in Asia, often mistaken for Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha of the founding Buddhism. The Laughing Buddha symbolizes prosperity, simple joy and benevolence towards oneself and others.
