Buddha and the Mala

According to legend, Shakyamuni Buddha was meditating deeply under the Bodhi tree when he was beset by the dark forces of evil who sought to distract him from his meditation.

In a gesture of compassion, the god Brahma offered a mala to the Buddha to help him concentrate and fend off distractions.

Through the use of this mala, the Buddha was able to continue his meditation undisturbed, and eventually attain enlightenment under the Bodhi tree.

Since then, mala has become an essential tool in Buddhist meditation practice, helping practitioners focus and cultivate mindfulness while reciting mantras, or counting their breaths.
